Jesus: The Christ and Son of God
From the very beginning of time, God had a plan to send His Son to save humanity. When Jesus came to Earth, He fulfilled hundreds of prophecies written long before His birth, proving He was truly the promised Messiah (Christ).
Jesus’s identity as God’s Son was confirmed at His baptism when God’s voice declared from heaven, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17). This wasn’t just a special moment; it was God Himself telling the world who Jesus really was.
During His time on Earth, Jesus proved His divine nature through His words, actions, and miracles. He did things only God could do, like forgiving sins and controlling nature. When He calmed a fierce storm, His disciples were amazed and asked, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?” (Matthew 8:27).
One of the clearest proofs of Jesus being God’s Son comes from His own claims. He didn’t just hint at it – He said it directly. In John 10:30, Jesus boldly stated, “I and the Father are one.” The religious leaders of His day understood exactly what He meant: He was claiming to be God. Later, when asked directly if He was the Christ, the Son of God, Jesus answered clearly, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven” (Mark 14:62).
Peter, one of Jesus’s closest followers, came to understand this truth. When Jesus asked His disciples who they thought He was, Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16). Jesus praised this answer, saying this knowledge came from God Himself.
The strongest evidence of Jesus’s divine identity is His resurrection from the dead. As Paul writes, Jesus was “declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead” (Romans 1:4). After His death on the cross, Jesus rose on the third day, just as He had promised. He appeared to His disciples and many others – at one point, to over 500 people at once (1 Corinthians 15:6).
Being both the Christ and the Son of God means Jesus is our perfect mediator between God and humans. As Scripture says, “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5). He understands our human struggles because He lived as one of us, yet He remains perfectly divine and able to represent us before God.
Jesus didn’t come just to teach good lessons or set a good example. He came to fulfill God’s plan of salvation. As John writes, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). His role as Christ means He is the anointed one, chosen by God to save humanity from sin.
Today, Jesus continues His role as our advocate with the Father. As the book of Hebrews teaches, “Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them” (Hebrews 7:25).
Believing that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, isn’t just about accepting facts – it’s about trusting in who He is and what He did. John explains the purpose of his gospel writing: “These are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31).
This belief should change how we live. When we truly understand who Jesus is – both Christ and Son of God – we respond with faith, repentance, and obedience. As Jesus Himself said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15).
Jesus’s identity as both Christ and Son of God means He is uniquely qualified to be our Savior, Lord, and King. He fulfilled God’s plan perfectly, died for our sins, rose again in victory, and now offers salvation to all who will believe and obey Him.
